Wonder Why…

When you wonder why you’re different,
Why you’re not like all the rest.
You stand out like a blackened eye,
You can never pass their test.

You feel the difference in your soul,
Like a jigsaw piece that never fits.
You try to force it into place,
And tear your jagged edge to bits.

You watch them move, so light and free,
Like life is something easily known.
While you exist inside a crowd,
Yet die of being so alone.

It’s in the way they look straight through,
As if you’re carved of thin, clear glass.
They share a world you cannot touch,
And leave you watching as they pass.

You mimic how they act and speak,
To hide the defect deep down inside.
The bitter truth you’ve always known,
The monster that you have to hide.

Regardless how much you try to change,
Or wear a smile to play the part,
You can’t erase the cold divide,
Or fix the stranger in your heart.

No matter how they pull you close,
And claim to know you through and through.
They’re looking at a quiet phantom,
They’ve never known the real you.
